New law sparks outrage in France

Protesters filled the streets across France after President Emmanuel Macron raised the nation’s retirement age from 62 to 64. On March 16, Macron used a special constitutional power to push through the change without a vote by parliament (similar to Congress). The retirement age is the age at which someone can stop working and become eligible to receive money from government pension plans. Workers contribute to these funds throughout their lives with money from their paychecks. Macron argues that unless people contribute two additional years of payments, the fund will run out of money. Citizens are angry that they will have to work two years longer and have been demonstrating against the changes since January. Many government officials are unhappy that Macron used his power to push through the change.…
