A day to recognize Down syndrome
World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD) is set to be observed on March 21 to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and ensure equal opportunities for people with the genetic condition. The day is marked by events, campaigns, and advocacy efforts. Down syndrome is a condition that affects a person’s development. People usually have 46 chromosomes (tiny structures in cells that carry instructions for how the body grows and functions), but people with Down syndrome have 47 due to an extra copy of chromosome 21. This affects how the brain and body develop, leading to differences in learning, growth, and physical traits. The United Nations (UN) designated March 21 as World Down Syndrome Day in 2011.
