Rare cougar sighting in Michigan
For the first time in 100 years, two cougar cubs have been spotted living in the Michigan wilderness. A resident took photos of the cubs on March 6 in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, and scientists reviewed the photos to confirm that the animals were cougars. Wild cougar cubs have not been seen in Michigan since the cats were hunted to extinction there in the early 1900s. Cougars, which are also known as mountain lions, pumas, or panthers, can run up to 50 mph. Males can weigh up to 200 pounds. They once lived throughout North America, but humans began hunting them because they thought they were a threat to livestock.
