The Special Olympics World Winter Games kicked off in Turin, Italy, on March 8, with an opening ceremony at Inalpi Arena. More than 1,500 athletes from 101 countries and territories are competing in eight sports, including figure skating, speed skating, alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding. The Special Olympics are the world’s largest sports and humanitarian event and provide year-round training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. They were established by Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a sister of John F. Kennedy, the 35th US President. Their sister Rosemary had learning disabilities and few chances to participate in sports. The first Games were held in Chicago in the summer of 1968. Today, the Special Olympics are held every two years, alternating between winterand summer. The last Winter Games, scheduled…
