Scientists have found a type of bacteria (tiny single-celled living things) that absorbs carbon dioxide (CO2) gas very quickly. CO2 is produced naturally and as a result of human activities such as burning coal, oil, and gasoline. It’s a greenhouse gas, meaning it traps heat in the atmosphere and causes the planet to warm up. The bacteria was discovered in hot springs near the island of Vulcano, in Italy. The team who found it realized it was absorbing large amounts of CO2 that were being produced by a volcano on the island. Experts say carbon capture (removing CO2) is a key part of slowing the planet’s climate crisis. The team will continue studying the bacteria to learn how it might be a natural resource for carbon capture.…
