Benton Lake Wildlife Refuge, Montana

Benton Lake, about 50 miles from the Rocky Mountains, is actually a shallow wetland that was created thousands of years ago. The refuge, which also includes prairie lands, can be explored with a nine-mile drive, bike rides, or hikes. It is a habitat for more than 200 bird species, including thousands of snow geese, ducks, and tundra swans in the spring; chestnut-collared longspurs and eared grebes in the summer; and gray partridges and northern goshawks in the winter.
