Scientists create map connecting flowering plants

Scientists have published a “tree of life” plant map, detailing how all of Earth’s flowering plants are related. The tree of life is similar to a periodic table of elements, which presents the chemical elements. It maps 9,506 flowering plant species. Flowering plants make up about 90% of all known plant life on Earth. Led by the Royal Botanic Gardens in the UK, the project involved 279 scientists from around the world. Over eight years, they gathered samples of angiosperms (plants that produce flowers and hold their seeds in fruits) from living plants, seed banks, and preserved samples of extinct plants.
