The home front on D-Day

An invasion of Europe to overcome the Axis powers was widely expected by Americans at home, who were anxious to learn when and where the battle would be. When news that the operation was underway broke in the US, workers at factories stopped for a moment of silence. In New York City, crowds gathered in Times Square to read live updates on electronic billboards and people filled houses of worship. Meanwhile, the Liberty Bell in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was rung for the first time in more than a century.
