UK election is called for July

In a surprise announcement on May 22, Rishi Sunak, the prime minister (PM) of the UK, called for an election on July 4. UK law requires Sunak to call for an election by January 2025, and political experts had expected he would wait until later this year to do so. Sunak’s move came as his party faces ongoing criticism over the economy, healthcare, and immigration into the UK. The main political parties in the UK are the Conservative Party, which is Sunak’s party and also called the Tories, and the Labour Party, led by Keir Starmer.
