Orphaned bears return to the wild

Wildlife officials have released two black bears into the California wilderness after the orphaned animals spent nearly a year recovering at the Humane Society’s Ramona Wildlife Center in San Diego. The brother bears were rescued last July by staff members from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife after their mother died in the San Bernardino mountains. The cubs, then 5 months old, weighed 15 and 12 pounds, putting them at risk of being attacked by other bears, coyotes, mountain lions, and bobcats. Male black bears of that age typically weigh about 25 pounds. After being treated at the center’s wildlife hospital, the bears were moved to a large enclosure that was similar to their natural environment.
