Major decision on paying college athletes

On May 23, the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) agreed to pay certain student athletes for playing college sports like football and basketball. The historic settlement could end the long-standing practice of treating college sports as amateur (unpaid) activities. What is the history of paying college athletes? College sports bring in billions of dollars each year, mostly from ticket and merchandise sales. Since the NCAA’s early years, however, student athletes have not been allowed to receive a share of that money.
