Athens, Greece Monuments close due to heat Greece’s most popular ancient site, a fifth-century monument complex called the Acropolis, was closed on the afternoons of June 12 and 13 to protect tourists during a heat wave. Temperatures in Greece exceeded 104º F, and several tourists went missing or died in the hot weather. Authorities shut down schools and attractions, set up air-conditioned areas, and monitored the heat with thermal cameras.
