Historic election result in Mexico

Voters in Mexico elected Claudia Sheinbaum president on June 2, making her the first female president in the nation’s history, as well as the first Jewish president. Sheinbaum won with nearly 60% of the vote and will begin a six-year term on October 1. The election was also historic because Sheinbaum’s main opponent, Xóchitl Gálvez, is a woman as well. Sheinbaum, age 61, holds a PhD (highest degree) in energy engineering and was part of a team of climate scientists and experts who won a Nobel Peace Prize. She is a longtime ally of the popular outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who was prevented by term limits from running again.
