Purebreds and mixed-breeds

It’s commonly thought that mixed-breed dogs are less likely to have health problems than purebreds. Mixed-breeds are believed to be healthier because they have a mix of genes (sections of DNA, a chemical that carries all the information about a living thing). But a new study of more than 27,000 dogs has found that purebred and mixed-breed dogs are diagnosed with health problems at similar rates. The research is based on information in the Dog Aging Project, an online database that collects information about pets’ health and lifestyles. The recent study found that the most common health problems in purebred and mixed-breed dogs were similar. For instance, both kinds of dogs are prone to ear infections and dental problems.…
