A Sumatran orangutan in Indonesia has stunned wildlife experts by treating a wound on his face with a medicinal plant. Scientists believe this could be a first for any wild animal. Rakus is an adult male orangutan living at the Suaq Balimbing research station inside Gunung Leuser National Park. One day, after he was injured with a deep cut under his right eye, researchers saw him chewing the leaves of a plant called akar kuning, which is known to have healing properties. He then made a paste from the leaves and applied it to the cut. The next day, he returned to eat more of the plant’s leaves. A few days later, Rakus’ face was completely healed.
