World’s largest iceberg is on the move
The oldest and largest iceberg in the world, known as A23a, is on the move after months of being stuck in one place. It is now drifting through the Southern Ocean, near Antarctica. Experts at the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) expect A23a to eventually reach warmer waters near the island of South Georgia, where it will break apart into smaller icebergs and melt. A23a is about 1,312 feet thick and covers 1,418 square miles, making it slightly larger than Rhode Island. The BAS said the massive iceberg’s journey “has been marked by intriguing scientific events.” In 1986, it broke off from Antarctica’s Filchner Ice Shelf.
