Zoo announces chimpanzee birth

A rare chimpanzee was born at the Chester Zoo in the UK, the zoo recently announced. The baby is a Western chimpanzee, the world’s rarest subspecies of chimp, which is critically endangered (at high risk of becoming extinct or no longer existing). As few as 18,000 exist in the wild in Africa, and 80% of the population has been lost in the past 25 years. Small populations of Western chimpanzees have been found in countries in West Africa such as Ghana and Senegal, but the animals have become extinct in three African countries. Habitat loss and the destruction of forests have contributed to the chimpanzees’ decline, as have hunting and diseases that were spread from humans. The new baby boy was born to a mom named ZeeZee.
