Since 1962, the city of Seattle, Washington, has featured a futuristic tower that points toward the stars. The Space Needle—an iconic landmark—started with a napkin. Born from a doodle Seattle was getting ready to host the 1962 World’s Fair, which would attract millions of visitors from around the world. The theme of the fair was “The Age of Space,” celebrating science and space exploration. Chief fair organizer Edward E. Carlson found inspiration in a broadcast tower he saw during a visit to Germany in 1959. Thinking a tower could serve as a central structure for the fair, he doodled an idea on a napkin.
