California struck by storms

Beginning on December 26, nine back-to-back rainstorms devastated California. For three weeks, record rainfall and hurricane-force winds struck from Southern California through the Central Coast and some Northern cities. What happened? More than 26 million residents were under flood watch as the storms dumped trillions of gallons of water, bringing an average of more than nine inches of rainfall for the state. Sacramento, the capital, recorded 11.33 inches of rain—more than half of what the area typically gets in a year. Los Angeles set a single-day rainfall record on January 14, with nearly two inches. Tens of thousands of people were ordered to evacuate, including more than 10,000 who live along the coast. Others were told to shelter in place.
