Big change for well-known character

In addition to being New Year’s Day, January 1 is also known as Public Domain Day. The day marks the expiration of certain copyrights, which are an original creator’s ownership of a work such as a book or film. In the US, many copyrights end after 95 years, and one famous character being affected in 2024 is a version of Mickey Mouse from the 1928 black-and-white short film Steamboat Willie. When something is copyrighted, a person or company must pay a fee to the owners of the original work if they want to use it. When the copyright expires, the work enters the public domain and anyone can freely adapt, share, or transform it without payment.
