Minnesota city council makes history

Seven women were sworn in as members of the St. Paul City Council in Minnesota on January 9. Experts said the ceremony was historic because St. Paul, which is the state capital, is the first large US city to have an all-female governing board. All seven council members are also under age 40 and six are women of color, making it the youngest and most racially diverse council in St. Paul history. Many political experts called the start of the council’s term a significant moment for the US. Nationwide, women typically make up between 25% and 30% of state and local elected officials.
