A close-up look at Jupiter’s volcanic moon

A spacecraft named Juno has captured highly detailed images of one of Jupiter’s moons. Juno, which is operated by NASA (the US space agency), flew about 930 miles above the surface of the moon Io. That’s closer than any other spacecraft has gotten since 2001, when NASA’s Galileo spacecraft passed 112 miles above Io’s south pole. Io is the third largest of Jupiter’s 95 moons and slightly bigger than Earth’s Moon. It’s also the most volcanic object in our solar system, with hundreds of volcanoes and lakes of molten (melted by high heat) lava on its surface.
