A spacecraft named Juno has captured highly detailed images of one of Jupiter’s moons. Juno, which is operated by NASA (the US space agency), flew about 930 miles above the surface of the moon Io. That’s closer than any other spacecraft has gotten since 2001, when NASA’s Galileo spacecraft passed 112 miles above Io’s south pole. Io is the third largest of Jupiter’s 95 moons and slightly bigger than Earth’s Moon. It’s also the most volcanic object in our solar system, with hundreds of volcanoes and lakes of molten (melted by high heat) lava on its surface. Since Juno was launched in August 2011, it has completed 57 flybys of Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, and three of its moons—Io, Ganymede, and Europa. The spacecraft has three…
