A fantasy of ice and snow in Japan

The weeklong Sapporo Snow Festival takes place every February.

People from all over the world travel to the city of Sapporo in northern Japan to see the massive snow structures at the Sapporo Snow Festival. How the celebration started The festival dates back to February 18, 1950, when students from local schools put up six snow sculptures in Sapporo’s Odori Park. The festival was officially recognized as an annual event by the city the next year. About 1,000 people participated in the festival in 1953, and one sculpture that year was nearly 50 feet tall.
