Black History Month begins

This February, the US is celebrating Black History Month, an annual event to honor the contributions Black Americans have made to the US throughout its history and in the present day. The theme for 2024, selected by the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH), is “African Americans and the Arts.” The theme was chosen to recognize the role artistic expression has played in the Black American experience and the distinctive types of art that Black people have created. The arts—including visual and performing arts, literature, music, and film—have been a way for Black Americans to celebrate their heritage and imagine a world without oppression, the ASALH said.
