Scientists call for changes to emojis
A study of the emoji database Emojipedia found that there are currently 92 animal emojis, 16 plants, one fungus, and one single-celled organism thought to be a type of bacteria. Scientists say this does not accurately represent the diversity of living things in real life and should be addressed. More than three quarters of animal emojis are vertebrates. There are very few arthropods (animals without a backbone but with a hard outer shell), which make up the majority of animal life on Earth. While there are multiple species of ants and crocodiles, there is only one emoji for each of those animals, and creatures such as flatworms are not shown at all.
