The Brooklyn Bridge, which stretches over New York City’s East River to connect Brooklyn and Manhattan, is traveled by thousands of people every day. One of the city’s most stunning sights originated as one man’s bold idea. A plan forms In 1831, engineer John Roebling immigrated from Germany to the US. He was a pioneer builder of the suspension bridge, a type that features a roadway hanging from wires called cables. One day in New York City, Roebling was riding a ferry across the East River from Brooklyn to Manhattan when he had an idea.
