COLLEGE BASKETBALL On January 21, Stanford University’s women’s basketball team beat Oregon State University, 65–56. It was Stanford head coach Tara VanDerveer’s 1,203rd career win, which broke a record held by former Duke University coach Mike Krzyzewski for the most head coaching wins in college basketball history. VanDerveer’s first head coaching job was in 1978. She has won three national championships at Stanford. FIELD HOCKEY The US women’s field hockey team beat Japan, 2–1, on January 18 to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. It was a major comeback for the team, which did not make the 2020 Games. GOLF Nick Dunlap, a 20-year-old who plays for the University of Alabama, has become the first amateur golfer to win a PGA Tour event since 1991. On January 21, he won…
