Some say it makes you smarter, but others think kids should play only if they want to.

Perhaps you’ve heard the sound of an entire classroom of kids learning to play the recorder at the same time. Or maybe you have performed at a piano recital or listened to a sibling practicing the trumpet or violin. Learning to play a musical instrument is hard work, but it can also be rewarding and fun. It’s exciting to learn new skills, and research shows that actively creating music by playing an instrument is like a workout for the brain, especially when you’re young.
