Scotland, United Kingdom Piece of Scottish heritage re-created Experts have re-created the oldest known tartan, a traditional Scottish patterned fabric. The tartan, which dates back to 1500–1600 CE, was discovered 40 years ago in a bog (wetland) in the Highlands region. A dye analysis showed that the original cloth was green, red, and yellow. A historian and a manufacturer of tartan fabrics worked together to reproduce the pattern so people today can purchase it.
