Oscar nominees announced

The nominations for the 96th annual Academy Awards, the most prestigious prizes in the film industry, were announced on January 23. The awards, known as the Oscars, recognize the top achievements in film in 2023. This year the nominations were voted on by Academy members from more than 93 countries—the most countries ever represented in voting. Oppenheimer, a film about scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer during World War II (1939–1945), led the nominations with 13, becoming the most nominated film in Oscar history. Film composer and five-time Oscar winner John Williams, age 91, broke the record he set last year for being the living person with the most nominations.
