Museum closes Native American displays

The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City announced that it has closed two major halls containing Native American artifacts. The closures were in response to new federal government regulations stating that museums must either return sacred objects to the tribes they belong to or obtain permission from the tribes to display the items. What happened? The Eastern Woodlands and Great Plains Halls, which occupy nearly 10,000 square feet of exhibit space, have been closed to the public. AMNH, one of the largest and most visited museums in the world, also covered five display cases and is examining its entire collection of more than 33 million specimens and artifacts to ensure that the new rules are followed.
