California condors released into wild
Seven California condors hatched and raised at the Oregon Zoo have been released into the wild in California. The species is considered critically endangered and was among the original animals included in the Endangered Species Act, which was passed in 1973. California condors are one of the largest species of flying birds, with wingspans of nearly 10 feet. Thousands of them once lived throughout the western US and parts of Mexico. Fossils have also been found in Florida and New York, which leads experts to believe they once lived there too. By 1982, due to habitat loss and other factors, the population had dropped to 22 birds.
