Rosa Parks was not the first person to be arrested for refusing to give up her seat on a public bus. At least four other Black riders from Alabama—15-year-old Claudette Colvin, 18-year-old Mary Louise Smith, 36-year-old Aurelia Browder, and 77-year-old Susie McDonald—participated in similar acts of civil disobedience before Parks did. Supported by civil rights leaders and represented by lawyers Fred Gray and Charles Langford, they challenged bus segregation laws in a court case known as Browder v. Gayle. In December 1956, the Supreme Court ruled that racial segregation on public buses was unconstitutional.…
