Birds are a topic of great interest in my family. My father was a talented artist, and birds were the subject of many of his paintings. My brother Jon is also a fan of birds and enjoys discussing them with his 11-year-old son, Elijah. They are especially intrigued by the bar-tailed godwit, one of which broke a record last year by flying 8,435 miles from Alaska to Australia without stopping. (How does the godwit do it?) When they read this issue of The Week Junior, I hope they will be impressed by the resilience of the birds in Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina following massive wildfires there (p10).
