Children’s book winners announced

The 2023 awards for the best books and digital media for children and young adults were announced on January 30. The American Library Association (ALA), the world’s oldest and largest library association, named the winners. What happened? Freewater, by Amina Luqman-Dawson, won the Newbery Medal and the Coretta Scott King Author Award. It is a historical novel about two enslaved children who escape from a plantation and reach a community called Freewater, which was created by formerly enslaved people. It is Luqman-Dawson’s first novel. “Hooray! Excellent choice,” author Erin Entrada Kelly, the 2018 Newbery winner, posted on social media when Freewater was named the Newbery winner.
