Kobuk Valley National Park, Alaska

In northwestern Alaska, above the Arctic Circle, this national park is part of two magnificent animal migrations. Every spring and fall, about 250,000 caribou cross the Kobuk River while traveling between their summer and winter homes. In spring, the arctic tern makes the longest migration of any bird in the world, flying all the way from Antarctica. The park is home to the Great Kobuk Sand Dunes, the largest active sand dunes in the Arctic. The dunes, which can be up to 100 feet high, shelter the Kobuk locoweed, a plant found nowhere else on Earth.…
