Forest birds make big comeback
After massive wildfires, a North American forest has made a strong recovery. In 2016, fires destroyed more than 140,000 acres of land in the southern Appalachian Mountains. Since then, much of the forest has begun to regrow. And now, to researchers’ surprise, birds are thriving in the burned places. A new study looked at three burned areas and three unburned areas of the Nantahala National Forest in North Carolina. Researchers counted the number and types of birds in each area during spring and early summer, when the birds typically breed. They tracked the numbers over time and saw that bird populations were growing especially quickly in the parts of the forest that were recovering from wildfires.
