Cleanup of the Appalachian Trail begins

A team of volunteers is working to clear a large, damaged area of the Appalachian Trail (AT). Hundreds of miles of the famous public trail remain closed after Hurricane Helene struck the southeastern US in September and caused extensive destruction to the path. The effort is being led by the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC), a volunteer group that manages the trail. What is the Appalachian Trail? The trail of more than 2,190 miles follows the Appalachian Mountains and spans 14 states from Georgia to Maine. It is a protected part of the National Park System and winds through eight national forests and six national parks.
