New insight on the invention of the wheel
The invention of the wheel is one of the biggest breakthroughs in human history, yet it is not known exactly where, when, or how it happened. A new study found evidence that copper miners in the Carpathian Mountains in Europe may have played a big part in developing the wheel, starting in about 4000 BCE. Before the wheel as we know it was invented, people transported heavy objects, like mining carts, by setting them on top of rollers. But workers had to move the rollers from the back of the object to the front, which was slow and would have been hard in a narrow mine shaft. The new study concluded that over the course of about 500 years, the miners improved this simple roller system to suit their needs.…
