Children’s Peace Prize awarded

Nila Ibrahimi, age 17, received the International Children’s Peace Prize for her work advocating for the rights of Afghan women and girls. The award is given by the KidsRights Foundation, which is based in the Netherlands, to recognize children who work on behalf of other young people. Past winners include climate activist Greta Thunberg and Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai. Winners receive an educational scholarship and money for their advocacy work. Ibrahimi is from Afghanistan, where the rights of women and girls have been limited for many years. In 2021, she protested a local ban against schoolgirls singing in public by posting a video of herself singing online. Her protest gained popular support and resulted in the ban being overturned.
