Helping fungi survive

Two nations are leading a global push to give fungi better environmental protection by classifying them separately from plants and animals. The UK and Chile submitted a proposal at an international conference on preserving and protecting biodiversity (variety of living things) that was held in Colombia from October 21 to November 1. The proposal calls for fungi to be classified as an “independent kingdom of life” and said laws should be established to protect fungi’s benefits to ecosystems and people. Advocates pointed out that fungi represent 16 times more of Earth’s biodiversity than plants. There is growing evidence that fungi play an important role in maintaining a healthy environment.…
