Marking 100 years of the Lincoln Memorial

May 30 marked the 100th anniversary of the Lincoln Memorial, which was dedicated in 1922. Built to honor Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the US, the memorial stands on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Lincoln became President in 1861. During the Civil War (1861–1865), he led the Northern states, which had mostly outlawed slavery, against the Southern states, which wanted to keep slavery. Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation to end slavery in 1863, and the North claimed victory in 1865. He was assassinated (killed for political reasons) that same year. To heal the nation, Congress proposed a memorial. Its centerpiece is a 19-foot-tall marble sculpture of Lincoln.
