Rebel forces take over Syria

On December 8, the president of Syria, Bashar al-Assad, fled the country as his government collapsed and rebels took control of Damascus, the capital. Assad had led the Middle Eastern country since taking over from his father in 2000. He was brought down by rebel forces in a 12-day offensive that surprised Syrians and world leaders. Assad’s government had been engaged in a brutal civil war with rebel groups since 2011. Like his father, Assad used harsh tactics to punish his opponents. During the war, more than 500,000 people died, millions fled Syria, and more than 150,000 people were imprisoned.
