Notre-Dame Cathedral reopens

On December 7 in Paris, France, the historic Notre-Dame Cathedral reopened to the public for the first time since it was damaged by a fire in 2019. At an elaborate ceremony, French President Emmanuel Macron hosted dignitaries from around the world after delivering on a bold promise to reopen the landmark within five years. What is Notre-Dame? For nearly 900 years, the soaring Catholic church has stood at the center of Paris, serving as a symbol of France. With its pointed arches, high towers, and flying buttresses (arched exterior supports), Notre-Dame is a famous example of Gothic architecture. Construction began in 1163 and continued for more than 180 years. Notre-Dame’s bells were built in the 1200s.
