Painting hangs upside down

Visitors have been viewing a famous painting upside down for 75 years. “New York City I,” by the Dutch artist Piet Mondrian, features a grid of bright lines. It was first displayed this way in 1945, after the artist’s death. Recently, an Italian artist pointed out the mistake to the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, the German museum where the painting hangs. However, curators have refused to turn the artwork over because it could be damaged. The museum said that “the fact that it can be read in any direction” may be the work’s “truly revolutionary feature.”…
