New device for exploring deep oceans

Deep sea exploration is a challenging and expensive task that requires special equipment and trained experts. As a result, humans have only been able to explore a small fraction (less than 20%) of the world’s oceans. To make it easier to do this, scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology designed a simple device that costs only about $700 to make. The device is named Maka Niu, which means “coconut eye” in Hawaiian. It uses an inexpensive, readily available Raspberry Pi computer chip and other common materials. Maka Niu has a camera and sensors and can dive down to more than 4,900 feet, which is in the bathypelagic zone, where light cannot reach.
