Bison bring life back to prairie land

Bison are giving prairie grasslands new life, research has found. Tallgrass prairie once covered more than 170 million acres of North America, from Indiana to Kansas and Canada to Texas. This ecosystem (a group of plants or animals in a certain place that affect each other) supports a variety of wildlife, including other plants, birds, reptiles, and mammals. However, tallgrass was mostly replaced by farmland. Bison once commonly grazed on these lands. These majestic mammals are herbivores (plant eaters), and in recent decades they have been reintroduced in Indiana to the largest remaining tallgrass prairie, which is now a nature preserve.
