Emperor penguins get protection

The US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) has officially listed emperor penguins as a threatened species. A threatened species is one that is at risk of becoming an endangered species (at high risk of becoming extinct, or no longer existing). This listing will give the penguin further legal protection from the federal government. “The listing of the emperor penguin serves as an alarm bell but also a call to action,” said Martha Williams, director of the FWS. Currently, the population of emperor penguins is at about 625,000 to 650,000 animals. The main danger to the species, which lives in Antarctica, comes from climate change (the long-term changes in weather patterns, including temperature, largely due to human activities).
