A career milestone

This year, Dale Haney marked his 50th year as chief White House groundskeeper. During his long career, he has seen 10 presidents take office. In his role, he tends to the White House’s 18 acres of lawn, 500 trees, thousands of shrubs, and famous flower and vegetable gardens. He is also tasked each year with choosing the official White House Christmas tree. To honor Haney’s 50 years on the job, President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden surprised him by planting an elm tree on the south grounds.
