For many years and many reasons, I was an admirer of former First Lady Rosalynn Carter before her death this week at age 96 (p3). During her time as First Lady—from 1977 to 1981, when her husband, Jimmy Carter, was the 39th President—she was a strong advocate for improving Americans’ access to mental health care, among other causes. After leaving the White House, she and her husband founded the Carter Center to help resolve conflicts and eliminate diseases around the world. The couple also helped build more than 4,000 homes with Habitat for Humanity, pounding nails side by side. Rosalynn Carter deserves the thousands of tributes that have poured forth since she died.
